A dozen roses to entice her olfactory senses, a diamond necklace to dazzle her eyes, lush fabrics to tickle her skin, intricate poetry strumming at her heartstrings, and bubbly champagne to cater to her taste...

Alas, Ruido Resonance – mobile suit mechanic and Gundam Meister – has none of those ; not even close. All he has are perhaps, the scent of uninspired soap and shampoo overwhelmed by the odor of material lubricants ; metallic dust and shavings clinging to his hair and clothes ; rough and calloused hands from stripped wires and soldering iron ; technical jargon to baffle the unfamiliar dominating his dictionary ; and a left over candy bar in one of his many pockets that he would absentmindedly chew on while working on Astraea's wirings.

.. and woe! How to woo yon fair maiden whose sun kissed locks dance in his peripheral vision whenever she slid her helmet off? Whose eyes rivaled that of a newly awakened Gundam, and whose voice sounded like a purring console in top condition?

“... such is the melancholy of mine existence, Astraea!”

Carried away in his thoughts, Ruido did not realize he had stood at the edge of the Gundam's open cockpit, candy bar clutched in his fist. All he got as a response is the noncommittal beep-hum of the console. Sadalsuud cocked its head to its side, and Meister 874 transmitted a voice communication into Ruido's cockpit.

“Are you sure you are in adequate physical and mental condition, Ruido Resonance? I am of the belief that you may need some rest.”

Others may have jumped into the cockpit and carried the exchange from there, but Ruido talked straight back to Sadalsuud – which was, all things being equal, 'normal' for the stocky red head.

“I... I'm O.K., 874...”

“You are not. You are distracted.”

Delivered in her usual deadpan, matter-of-fact tone of voice.

“... nah. But I guess a cup of coffee would do me good –”

“And I rationalize that you need to see Marlene Vlady.”

Ruido's face turned as red as his hair. “H-how did you...?”

“Have you forgotten that Gundam have ears, Ruido Resonance.”

He snapped his head to look at his Gundam's head. “Astraea, how could you?!” The great blue-and-white machine did not move, but to Ruido, the console's beeps may have actually sounded like chirps.

“Astraea did not tell me. Sadalsuud did...”

The mechanic looked like he would stop breathing at any minute. “Y-you didn't tell anyone, did you, 874?”

“I did not –”

“Oh, thank y–”

“-- but Sadalsuud told Plutone and Abulhool.”

Shocked and quite woebegone, Ruido looked to the other Gundam – the grey and orange jet, and the tall and stocky one – who simply carried on being Gundam, innocent and quiet.

“Y-you did not tell any Haro, did you?”

Sadalsuud moved its head back to its neutral position and moved left, then right. “We know how Haro tend to parrot all they hear. We will not do that.”

Sighing in relief, Ruido sat back in Astreaea's cockpit. “I just don't know how to tell her, 874.”

From his position, 874's gentle voice surrounded him, and fancied him a little display to his left. “I have yet to learn the intricacies of human attraction, but what I can say is this,” curious red eyes peered at him, “Marlene Vlady is quite fond of the Haro units. The one that delivers her food to her cell has provided her some entertainment in more than one instance.”

Ruido Resonance may not have roses, diamonds, champagne or chocolates, but he had pretty good cogs built into his head – and good friends to boot.

“Thank you, 874.”

“I am not the only one you should thank.”

A smile, and a fond patting at the panel to his right. “Thanks guys...”

Marlene stretched her cuffed hands upwards with a yawn. After being cooped up in this cell for so long, she knew that when she yawned, it was dinner time.

“Marlene! Marlene! Dinner time! Dinner time!”

And the blue Haro assigned to her cell called from the hall by her door. A hatch about the size of a cat flap slid upwards, and a Haro with legs waddled inside, holding her sizable tray of provisions, which the Meister received. The Haro closed the cat flap and unlocked Marlene's cuffs as to allow her comfort while eating.

“Anything new today, Blue?”

Red eyes blinked as Marlene sat down at her table, tucking in to her meal. “You have a message! A message!”

“Hm.” Just one message. Either it was Chall with a silly question, or Ian getting her approval on some updates done on Abulhool. The latter however would require the Haro to haul in a terminal for her to look over said updates, but the absence of which only meant the former. The resigned sigh was a signal for Blue to open the message.

“H-hey Marlene. It's Ruido.”

Aqua eyes slowly looked down at the blue orb. Hm. Ruido sending a message.

“Listen, I... uh... I'm not good with words, but I was thinking that you might need some distraction while waiting? These are songs I listen to. They're old, but I think they're upbeat and they keep me awake when tinkering with the Gundam, so...”

A small smile curled up her lips as she picked the Haro unit up and placed it on her table. Ruido sounded like an awkward high school boy...

“... Haro will play the first file after this message. I hope you like it.

“'Guess I'll see you around then.”

The message ended and the Haro opened its shell as electric guitars lined the intro and gave way to drum beats and vocals typical of upbeat rock music. The lyrics caught her attention though...

I can't explain
I think it's love
I'm trying to say to you
When I feel blue
But I can't explain (can't explain)
Just hear what I'm saying baby (can't explain)

Marlene chuckled to herself as the song ended and Haro closed itself. She was amused that perhaps Ruido nor the Haro knew that there was a thing called a 'serenade'...

“There are more songs! More songs!”

“I'll listen to them, Blue. But can you send a message to Ruido for me? And I think I may be in need of more songs...”

-- END --

... to finish off, the song. ^_^

This is too adorable for words. XDD I really liked the exchange between Ruido and 874 [and the Gundam!]. And I could totally picture the whole scene when Haro was playing the song to Marlene in my head as I read that part. ♥

Incidentally, I really liked the phrase you used for your cut. XD Totally not the mechaphile in me speaking.

*reads this again*

Excellent! Poor Ruido *patpats him* -- but a perfect idea to use, yes ~

Also, the lads highly approve. The meddling creatures X3
